If you have lived in Reston for more than a couple of summers, you already know the rhythm. Saturday morning at Lake Anne, Saturday night under the Pavilion, a weeknight concert somewhere in between. What is different in 2026 is the southern end of that arc. The RTC Next expansion, at Sunset Hills Road and Town Center Parkway, has finally opened enough doors this year to pull weekend traffic a few blocks south of Market Street. The center of gravity for a Reston summer weekend is spreading, and the map worth carrying in your head this July looks different from the one you used last year.
The Saturday Morning Anchor Has Not Moved
The Lake Anne end of the arc still opens the weekend. The Reston Farmers Market runs every Saturday in the Lake Anne Village parking lot at 1609 Washington Plaza North, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., through November 21. The producer-only rule is the reason regulars keep coming back. All farmers and producers may only sell what they raise on their farms or make from scratch, which is why the vendor list reads differently from a typical grocery run.
A few things about the plaza itself are worth updating in your mental picture:
- The independents around the water have held their footprint. Lake Anne Brew House, Lake Anne Coffee House & Wine Bar, Kalypso's Sports Tavern, and Cafe Montmartre are all still anchoring the food side of the plaza.
- Reston Brats n Beers, from the company behind Shipgarten in Tysons, leased space in Lake Anne Plaza and took over the former K.G.'s Cutz barbershop at 1610 Washington Plaza North.
- The Elden Street Tea Shop, which relocated from downtown Herndon, is now a fixture for anyone who wants a slower Saturday than the market crowd allows.
- Lake Anne Plaza was named to the National Register of Historic Places, which matters less as trivia than as an explanation for why the storefronts stay small and independently owned instead of turning into another chain-lined block.
If your Saturday routine ends at the coffee house patio, you are doing it right. If it ends at the car by 10:30, you are missing the point.
Saturday Night Still Belongs To The Pavilion
Reston Concerts on the Town is back for its 33rd season, bringing free live music to the Reston Town Center Pavilion every Saturday night from May 16 through August 22. The series opens on May 16 with Yacht Lobsters, kicking off a summer filled with great music, a lively atmosphere, and sip and stroll.
The lineup is stronger than usual this year. RTCA Executive Director Robert Goudie described last year's attendance as record-setting and called the 2026 booking even better. A few dates worth circling:
June 5 and 6: Big Al & the Jokers (Latvian band making its U.S. premiere, mixes swing, rock and R&B). June 27: RDGLDGRN (alternative band started in Reston that has worked with artists like Pharrell and Dave Grohl).
The series closes on August 22 with Almost Queen, a tribute act. Practical details: all concerts are held rain or shine unless there are severe storms, and any weather-related cancellations are shared the day of the concert on RTCA's website and by phone at 703-435-6600, extension 2.
The Sip and Stroll footprint is the part longtime residents sometimes forget to use. The program lets attendees enjoy beverages purchased from participating restaurants, including Makers Union, CitySwing, North Italia, Sixty Vines, Ted's Bulletin, Kusshi Sushi, Fogo de Chão, True Food Kitchen, Capital Burger, and Masti. You do not have to commit to a table to get a drink and a walk.
What Actually Changed This Year: The Block South Of Market Street
Here is the update that reshapes the summer map. RTC Next, the expansion at the intersection of Sunset Hills Road and Town Center Parkway, spent the last two years as a construction story. In 2026 it turned into a dining story. The pace of openings and announcements is the reason the neighborhood feels different this July than it did last July.

Clarity is the one to circle. Opening night dishes include Cream of Asparagus Soup, Steamed PEI Mussels, Five Spice Short Rib, and Roasted Australian Rack of Lamb. If you have been driving to Vienna for a special occasion dinner, that trip stops being necessary at the end of this month.
The Weeknight Map Most Residents Have Not Updated
The Saturday Pavilion show is the concert everyone knows about. The weeknight programming is where the gap between longtime residents and everyone else shows up. Between late May and early September, nine different free concert series light up the area on weeknights and weekends alike, at the Herndon Town Green, the Reston Town Center Pavilion, Reston Town Square Park, Reston Station's Metro Plaza, Lake Anne Plaza, Halley Rise, and Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon. That is, by any measure, a remarkable amount of free live music.
The Reston Community Center's summer series is the through-line across most of these venues. A few worth putting on the calendar this month:
Sunday Art in the Park with Shenandoah Conservatory. Sundays, June 21 through August 30, 2026, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Reston Town Square Park. Produced in partnership between RCC and Shenandoah University's Conservatory, the series features different Shenandoah ensembles each week — strings, brass, chamber groups. The level of musicianship is genuinely high, and the outdoor setting in the heart of Reston Town Center gives it a European summer festival feel.
Take a Break Thursdays at Halley Rise. Thursdays, June 25 through August 27, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at 2025 Fulton Place. The booking pulls from a wider range of genres — swing one week, Caribbean rhythms the next. The venue is Halley Rise, the newer mixed-use development near the Herndon Metro and Wegmans, with a pleasant outdoor plaza suited to an early-evening show.
Happy Hour with Darden & Friends. Fridays at Reston Town Square Park, 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. A cornerstone of the D.C. jazz scene, vocalist and bandleader Darden Purcell curates this series, bringing her warm, swinging sensibility to a relaxed, after-work lineup of top regional talent.

What This Adds Up To For The People Already Here
The interesting thing about the RTC Next openings is not that Reston got new restaurants. Northern Virginia gets new restaurants every quarter. What is different is that the concentration of independent, mid-to-upper-tier food along the Sunset Hills corridor has crossed a threshold where a Reston resident can plan a Friday night without leaving the neighborhood and without repeating a restaurant for a month. That was harder to do in 2024. It is not hard now.
The other thing worth naming: the mix works because the two ends of the arc do different things. Lake Anne stays small, historic, and independent — that is protected by the National Register designation and by the Fairfax County revitalization framework governing the plaza. RTC Next fills the gap the other way, with named concepts and larger footprints. The middle, at Market Street and Town Square Park, holds the free concerts and the community programming. You do not have to choose.
For homeowners thinking about the year ahead, none of this is background. Food-forward amenities are a magnet for today's homebuyers, and when a walkable neighborhood keeps adding buzzworthy cafés and restaurants, buyer interest tends to rise. The half-mile walking radius around either Lake Anne or the Pavilion is doing more work in a listing description this summer than it was doing last summer.
